Bigas Luna Tribute – Film analysis workshop

The workshop will consist of three parts:

– Part I: filmmaker Santiago Garrido Rua (Second Unit director for Yo soy la Juani) will deconstruct a sequence from the film from a practitioner’s perspective.

– Part II: film specialist Santiago Fouz Hernández (Durham University) will provide some tips to analyze the same sequence from an academic/Film Studies perspective.

– Part III: those in attendance will have a chance to work in ‘breakout rooms’ with supervision from both speakers and then discuss the conclusions as a single group at the end.

Santiago Garrido Rua is a filmmaker, writer and editor who works on mainstream commercial cinema, art house cinema, television, video and the internet. He has taught Film, Media Arts and Technologies in taught and research programmes in various universities in Barcelona and also at primary and secondary school level in Sardinia since 2002. In 2020 he was Zurbarán fellow at Durham University. He trained with iconic Spanish filmmaker Bigas Luna, attending his famous Taller (workshop) in 2001 and collaborating in major projects which have included the films Yo soy la Juani/My Name is Juani (2006), advertisements for Spanish television and the posthumous documentary BigasxBigas (2016) based on over 600 hours of video diaries which he edited and directed. He has recently completed the restoration and edition of Mouche d’amour, an unfinished videoart piece produced by Bigas Luna that will be premiered in Spain in 2021 before touring exhibitions around the world. Santiago’s current focus is on visual technologies (including virtual and augmented reality), image narratives and audio-visual language pedagogy.

Santiago Fouz Hernández is Professor in Hispanic Studies and Film Studies at Durham University, UK, where he has been based since 1999. He has also been a visiting scholar at the Universities of Queensland, CUNY Graduate Center, Harvard, California Berkeley, and Pittsburgh and a fellow of the Madrid Institute for Advanced Study. He holds an MA and a PhD from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne and a Licenciatura from Santiago de Compostela. He is the author of Cuerpos de cine (Bellaterra, 2013), co-author (with Alfredo Martínez-Expósito) of Live Flesh: The Male Body in Contemporary Spanish Cinema (I. B. Tauris, 2007) and editor of five books including El legado cinematográfico de Bigas Luna (Tirant lo Blanch, 2020), Spanish Erotic Cinema (Edinburgh University Press, 2017) and Mysterious Skin (I. B. Tauris, 2009). He is editorial board member of Studies in Spanish and Latin American Cinemas. Since 2015 he coordinates (with Betty Bigas) The Bigas Luna Tribute, a series of international retrospectives and exhibitions to promote his legacy.
